BOOKS READ IN JANUARY

Here in Los Angeles we had a few cold days, a couple rainy days, a mudslide down our street, but all in all fairly mild weather compared to much of the rest of the country. The peacocks were happy. So was I since I set an ambitious reading goal for 2018, not because I want to compete with anyone but because I have recommitted to my writing and have a lot of books to get through. I was happy to have made my goal of 12 books read and I liked every one!

Stats: 12 books read. 10 fiction. 7 written by women. 5 by authors new to me. 2 historical. 1 Nobel Prize winning author. 1 translated. 1 mystery. 3 speculative. 2 non fiction. 7 for My Big Fat Reading Project.
Favorites: Miss Burma, The Resurrection of Joan Ashby, The Secret River.
Least favorite: none

I am way behind on writing my reviews of these books and posting them here but hope to get caught up soon plus make my reading goal for next month.

How was your reading in January? Do you have any recommendations for me?

  1. Looks like you had a great month of reading for January 2018! Way to go! I only read five books to date.

Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance, and Revolution in Trump's America edited by Samhita Mukhopadhyay & Kate Harding was my best read last month.

    2. I didn't know there were follow-up books. It's been ages since I read "The Secret River", so I might read it again first and then carry on reading the others. Thanks.

  6. You read some high quality books! Great month. I watched the Joan Didion documentary on Netflix which seemed quite sad to me. I still need to watch the Baldwin documentary. Your reading of The Secret River prompted me to go back & read my review of it. http://www.thecuecard.com/?s=the+secret+river I liked it quite a bit. I should get her other two in that trilogy .... and brush up on my Australian history for sure.

    1. Truly it was a great month. I agree on the Didion doc. I went back and read your review of The Secret River. Turns out I was already following you then. I didn't realize it had been that long. Your review then made me even more resolved to read the book! Now we need to read the sequels, no? Oh and for sure do not miss the Baldwin doc.

  7. Congratulations on reaching your reading goal - 12 books is a mammoth amount to me! In January, I am pleased to have got my reading mojo back after the busyness of December and Christmas. I managed to finish 5 books: 2 novels and 3 non-fiction. My favourite of which was the eye-opening memoir Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus by Nabeel Qureshi. Here's to more great reading in February!

    1. Thank you Jessica. 12 books a month is always my goal and since I am retired I should be able to make it, but as we all know, life still gets in the way sometimes. I loved your review of Seeking Allah. Best wishes for February.
