But our house is fine, all our neighbors are fine and the fire is nearly out. Firefighters are the best. Only 4 homes lost in the worst brush fire LA has seen since 1961. No deaths. Only 6 injuries. Pretty amazing.
Judy Kruegerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11632346091869688862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14124551.post-59947925261710325152017-09-04T12:53:21.203-07:002017-09-04T12:53:21.203-07:00August is a busy month! She left us that and her poetry at least.Judy Kruegerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11632346091869688862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14124551.post-30832609334094454092017-09-03T12:19:58.511-07:002017-09-03T12:19:58.511-07:00I hope the fire doesn't do too much damage and...I hope the fire doesn't do too much damage and your home is spared.

As always, you read an impressive amount. Glad you stuck the Bell Jar in there; I probably need to revisit it -- been a long while. Oh Sylvia where did your hope go? We need you Sylvia. thecuecardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08870323589682197091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14124551.post-46104896276100547582017-09-02T14:34:35.376-07:002017-09-02T14:34:35.376-07:00It was a good month Helen. Right now we are on the edge of a huge brush fire, set to evacuate our home if needed, and I can hardly think a thought. So when you see the next review, it means we are ok.Judy Kruegerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11632346091869688862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14124551.post-13415711073297059492017-09-02T13:14:04.701-07:002017-09-02T13:14:04.701-07:00That sounds like a good month of reading! I'll look forward to your review of The Ministry of Utmost Happiness - I've seen a mixture of opinions so far.Helenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06618973352348296555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14124551.post-22420076649176628282017-09-01T13:46:08.873-07:002017-09-01T13:46:08.873-07:00Thank you Dorothy. I will say more when I review it, but most of the major newspaper reviewers gave it tepid praise or were downright dismayed. I think she went where it was inevitable for her to go because of all her political work and writing. For me, it was brilliant and very much like reading a translated work of fiction. It feels foreign. It is also Nobel Prize worthy writing about a major player on the world scene: India.Judy Kruegerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11632346091869688862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14124551.post-51982625030057049242017-09-01T13:34:48.033-07:002017-09-01T13:34:48.033-07:00As always, a very impressive list. Also, I've wanted to reread The God of Small Things first - I read it so long ago. I hope to get to them both soon.
