JANUARY READING GROUP UPDATE

It does not snow where I live in California. It rains though and this year, after all the drought, I swear I am not going to complain when it rains; I am not going to get SAD, I am going to rejoice! It is raining today. Yes!

I have already read two of the books chosen for this month: All the Light We Cannot See and The Invention of Wings. Both are books I loved, so I am happy for another chance to discuss them. Two of The Tiny Book Club's members are of Polish descent so we are starting the year with a book by a Polish author. That fits right in with my goal to read more translated literature and the author is female. It's all good.

  1. I've heard good things about The Invention of Wings so I might have to put that one on my reading list. And of course I loved All the Light You Cannot See. Glad you did, too!

  2. If you liked The Secret Life of Bees (and somehow I bet you did), you will like Invention of Wings. The Sue Monk Kidd I like is back in form and it is great historical as well as feminist fiction about the Grimke sisters who worked for abolition and women's rights even though they were from a southern slave owning family.

  3. I've wanted to read AJ Fikry since I read Sarah's review at Sarah's Book Shelves. She loved it. I also put The Invention of Wings on my TBR because of your review, Judy. I have them on my list to read this year.

  4. Hello dear Judy!
I haven't joined any reading groups yet... I have a very demanding full time job... besides, I always choose the next book according to my mood!!  I'm enjoying a few days off... and still reading Rosa Candida. Lots of love

  5. Let's see I have read 2 of the ones above: All the Light We Cannot See (which I liked) and The AJ Fikry novel which I liked but thought was a bit too sugary (for me) and could've been better. As a former bookstore employee I thought there could've been more about the bookstore & books in it -- there was at the beginning but it sort of faded. Anyways I'm curious about The Paying Guests as I have read one of Waters's other books. Enjoy your groups!

    1. I felt the same about AJ Fikry: started out good with the bookstore stuff (I too have worked in a bookstore) but the romance and the plot twists could be seen coming a mile away. Now I am reading The Paying Guests and it is speeding by and feels right!
