Oh how I miss the reality of the image above. None of my reading groups met in March due to COVID19. This month a few of the groups have switched over to Zoom, so I have something to report. The Bookie Babes were the first to manage a Zoom meeting early in the month. It worked well. We will meet again this way later in the month and that will put us back on schedule.

How are your reading groups managing? How are you doing over all? Hoping this finds you well and coping decently with staying at home and wondering what comes next.
I'm doing OK so far. My family are doing OK too. They live about 250 miles north of me but we stay in touch by phone. Reading wise I'm hitting about 80 pages a day which is good for me (I usually hit 60ish). I could push it to around 100 but I'm pacing myself & doing other things to break up the day but it means I'm going to hit 75-80 books this year which is a boost. Hope you're feeling fit & healthy. It's going to be quite a party when this is all over.... [grin]
ReplyDeleteI am extremely glad to know you and your family are OK! 80 pages a day is great. Myself, my family, are all well. Doing better on my fitness this past week, before that I was a slug. The after party could be challenging I imagine.
DeleteYeah I'm liking the Zoom chats too. My sister started my family on it & it seems to be working well. Glad you can meet with your book groups this way. We are fine up here -- sheltering in place ... it keeps snowing so perhaps that will be good for the mountains. Of your list above, I've only read The Robber Bride but it was enjoyable. I should add more Kingsolver to my list. Stay well.
ReplyDeleteGood news! We finally have sunshine today after 7 days of rain. Kingsolver is THE antidote to mean, snarky, incompetent jerks!!
DeleteOoo... I read The Robber Bride in the 1990s and loved it!! Have you read it before?
ReplyDeleteYes, I read it then too! Reading it again and loving it even more from the perspective of my older years-:)
Deletemrs M and her Zen friends did ZOOM sitting; i guess it worked okay... i learned today that our county has 10 cases of the plague... and a population of about 43,000, mostly in the south part.... the others are surrounded by clear cuts (like us)... i still go for bike rides in the deserted city across the Columbia; doesn't seem particularly hazardous, but we'll see if the black death strides again haha...
ReplyDeleteZoom sitting sounds like quite an extension of the Zen practice! Zen Zoom.
DeleteI figured you would be relatively safe in your remote location. I hope it stays that way for you.
I am working from home, but do to the pandemic I have been working such long hours I have had barely enough time to catch my breath. I have been reading at a slow pace.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you have read some great books.
Are you working such long hours because others can't? I have been reading for long hours to keep myself distracted.
DeleteMy daughters schooling has switched to Zoom as well. It’s just not the same. But I’ve heard nothing but good things about Educated so I can’t wait to hear what you think.
ReplyDeleteActually I read Educated about a year ago. Here is the link to my review: https://keepthewisdom.blogspot.com/2019/06/educated.html
DeleteThank you for reminding me of Barbara Kingsolver's book. I read it a couple of years ago and loved it but had not thought of it for a while. You're absolutely right. She is THE antidote to mean, snarky, incompetent jerks and God knows we need that these days!
ReplyDeleteIt was pure pleasure to read it again.
DeleteI'm only in online book groups so nothing's very different but I sure miss the ability to just walk to someone, have a chat, and plan some fun. Wonder when we'll ever get to that - I expect a whole new set of social customs being introduced in the long term. So glad that you were able to Zoom meet with a group - I can see how that can be so much fun!
ReplyDeleteJust this morning husband and I were talking about how it will go, to get back to interacting with others face to face. First I will have to get my hair cut, I know that. LOL.
DeleteJudy, I am pleased to hear that the 'pandemic-that-shall-not-be-named' has not stopped your reading groups and that a few of them have been able to meet on Zoom.
ReplyDeleteI am happy about that too!
DeleteI read a few from your book group list. I always tend to enjoy Kingsolver and Atwood. I wish our book group would do Zoom but, several of our seniors are not tech savvy so I'm guessing that's why it hasn't been tried?
ReplyDeleteZoom is not that hard to navigate but it would take some help for the non-tech savvy, which could be hard to come by in these isolated days.
DeleteEducated is SO GOOD. I loved it. Completely insane, but so well-written.
ReplyDeleteI agree. This will be my second reading group discussion for it and I am looking forward to it.
DeleteI can't imagine staying for so long, but then again I have never been in a position like that of having to choose between my family and the life that is waiting for me. Stories like this are so interesting to me for that reason.
DeleteI really loved Unsheltered as I like all books by Barbara Kingsolver.
ReplyDelete"Educated" was on my wishlist for my library when we moved, so I'll have to go and buy it, I guess.
And you know I've read lots of books by Margaret Atwood.
So, your list looks brilliant to me. :_
Yes, much to discuss this month!
DeleteI'm glad you found a way to "meet up" with your bookclub! I can't wait for life to be "normal" again. I'm just really scared that's going to take a while, or that the "normal" is changed drastically by that time. Well, until that time I'll just hide in my books!
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to imagine the future right now. Good time to read sci fi actually, which is what I am doing now!
