AUGUST READING GROUP UPDATE

Four of my six reading groups are still meeting on Zoom. I have not heard from the other two but four Zoom meetings a month is just about plenty for me. Everyone has worked out their glitches and we are all old pros by now.

Two groups chose the same book again this month. All of the books deal with diversity of one kind or another and that is appropriate for the times. None are about pandemics though. Good!!

One Book At A Time:

I finished reading this yesterday and it is amazing!
Just came out in paperback last month.

Carol's Group and Bookie Babes:

No review I have read prepared me for all that goes on in this novel.
I am reading it now and whoa!!

Tiny Book Club:

This is a memoir by one of my favorite authors.
Can't wait to read it.
It comes out in paperback this month.

Have you read/discussed any of these books?
Are you meeting with a reading group this month? If yes, what will you discuss?

  1. Impressive that you still have several book groups continuing during COVID. My library one has had a few Zoom meetings but I haven't participate. The Vanishing Half is on my list.

    1. It has turned out to be a blessing. I would be lost without my reading groups. I hope you find The Vanishing Half to be to your liking.

  2. Zoom seems to be the designated way of meeting these days. Last evening we had a meeting of the board of directors of our nature club, and we met outside, in Waterloo Park, keeping a sensible distance from each other and it was delightful and worked well.

    1. Ah, I envy you. It is still too early for that here in Los Angeles. Too many cases, too many irresponsible people running around without masks and spreading the virus. Someday I hope we can meet in person again.

  3. I've always wanted to read the Steph Cha book! All three of these books make it look like a great month for you. The top two I'd like to read this fall. I actually started The Vanishing Half and was into it ... but then my e-book was due from Library, argh & it disappeared! Crazy. Have fun on the Zooms.

    1. Thanks, Susan. You will enjoy both of those books I am sure. New insights are to be had.

  5. Looks like your book clubs are going strong during covid-19, which is great!! I haven't read any of the books listed, but do want to read Brit Bennett's new novel at some point.

I joined BookClubbish's online book club last month and am currently reading their current book club pick for this month - The Woman Before Wallis by Bryn Turnbull. So far it's great.... Historical fiction that involves the Vanderbilts and royal scandal.

  7. I hope you and your groups will enjoy these books, Judy. No meeting for my church's book club this month - We will be meeting next month to discuss No God But One: Allah or Jesus by Nabeel Qureshi, which is a book I recommended. 😃

    1. Thank you for your reading group update, Jessica. No God but one God is a sentiment I hold to be true.

  8. I could not keep up with six books clubs. I am such a mood reader, it would never work.

    1. Sometimes a reading group pick does not fit my mood, but I would be lonely without seeing my reading friends regularly. Usually I end up not minding having my mood changed after all!

  9. I loved The Vanishing Half, but alas have no book club discussions these days. A goal for fall/winter is to find or form a new club that will carry on (via zoom or otherwise) during the pandemic. In the Country of Women is on my list, too.

    1. Oh, JoAnn. If you wish, I could invite you to one of mine. I am sure you would be welcome.

    2. Judy - Thank you so much... that's so thoughtful! I should have things set up by the time we get back to FL though. A couple of friends (already in the library group that is not meeting) have expressed interest in socially distant patio meeting, so three or four of us will give it a try when we return. My NY group seems to have fallen apart... Zoom intimidates too many of them!

  10. They all sound great. I'm especially intrigued by "In the Country of Women". I've never heard of Susan Straight and you claim she's one of your favourite authors. Will have to check her out.

    1. I think you would love Susan Straight if you read her. She is a good one to follow in order of publication, though you could read In the Country of Women at any point.

    2. I've put her book on my wishlist since it's not out on PB, yet.

Which one of her books would you recommend I read first?

    3. Blacker Than a Thousand Midnights followed by The Gettin' Place.

  11. I've put them both on my wishlist. Thanks, Judy
