Once more, on Zoom, at least three of my groups will meet. But a glimmer of hope with the vaccine rollout is stimulating speculation about when, where and how we could me in person again.
One Book At A Time:
I know, you are thinking didn't we discuss that last month? Due to illness, the meeting was postponed until March, so I will do my best to remember why I loved this book so much.
Bookie Babes:
Carol's Group:
This is one of my favorite books ever and while I will not reread, I am beyond excited to finally discuss it with the great readers in this group.
Have you read or discussed any of these books? Are you anticipating meeting in person again if you have a reading group or two you belong to?
I've read I A Malala and own a copy of The Overstory but have not read it yet. Hope you have a good discussion.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I am one of the few who have not read I Am Malala?
DeleteThe Overstory is a big, complex novel but so very good. https://keepthewisdom.blogspot.com/2018/08/the-overstory.html
I haven't read and don't own the Malala book so you're not alone in that! Not on my radar to read..
DeleteA relief to know!
DeleteI have read I am Malala. It's very good. It's co-written by a great journalist who knows a lot about the region (Christina Lamb, author of my favourite Afghanistan book, The Sewing Circles of Herat. So, definitely worth a read.
ReplyDeleteThe Overstory was also a huge favourite of mine. I read it because it received the Pulitzer Prize and it will not be my last book by this author who reminded me a little of Barbara Kingsolver.
Thanks, Marianne. I am sure I will learn new things. Agreed on The Overstory.
DeleteOf course. :D
DeleteThe thought of regular, face-to-face, handshake and hug meetings, makes me giddy!
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteI've read and loved both Alvarez's and Powers' books. I do not choose to read the Malala book. She is such an admirable young woman, but I'm just not that into memoirs in general.
ReplyDeleteEventually you will find out how I found the Malala book-:)
DeleteI enjoyed I Am Malala.
ReplyDeleteThat is good to know, Lisa. Actually I am curious about the book as I have read several books set in Pakistan.
DeleteAll three books look interesting. I have read "I am Malala" and even though it's not a light story, I loved it. I hope your reading group liked it too. Take care :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your input, Victoria. I think Malala will be liked by the group I am reading it with.
DeleteThe Overstory is on my list to read this year! (Finally.) I'm keen on it. I'm a bit curious about the Malala book after reading the Dancing in the Mosque book. Gosh we can't let the Taliban back to damage girls' lives!
ReplyDeleteI am keen on you reading The Overstory and me reading your review when you do!
DeleteI loved I am Malala - made me embarrassed that such a little girl achieved so much while I've been pretty well sheltered. Not the intent of the book of course, but inspires you that little kids do challenge authority, even when the consequence can be death and tragedy.
ReplyDeleteI will be reading the book this week. So glad to know you loved it. I have a granddaughter who challenges authority and gets results!
DeleteI’m curious about the Overstory, it sounds good!
ReplyDeleteIt is! Especially if you love trees-:)
DeleteI keep meaning to read Malala's book, but never quite get around to it. I have "Malala's Magic Pencil" for my students and it is absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI am going to get around to it, this week! I looked up Malala's Magic Pencil. It looks cool.
DeleteI am sure you will both love it. She is such a strong girl, incredible. And she had a great co-author who helped her so the story is very readable.
DeleteJudy - it is a fantastic read and introduced my students to a world they did not know existed. They asked me to read it multiple times, it is powerful.
DeleteMarianne - her book is still on my TBR. I will get there...eventually!
I finished the I Am Malala today and now I know what the magic pencil is!
DeleteI will have to look for that one, then.
DeleteI Am Malala was aw book I saw everywhere when it first came out to glowing reviews!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I get cynical about books that get so much hype and attention, so I guess I will find out starting today, what I think about it.
DeleteI know exactly what you mean, I feel the same. But Malala's book is really not like that.
