Whoa! Fourth of July preparations took over this week. I cleaned, I shopped, I cooked, I hosted. It was huge: fun, food, family, fireworks. OK, now I am back to my regularly scheduled activities. I hope yours was as special as ours!
Once again my reading groups have a great and varied selection of books. I have read two in the past: White Teeth I will reread because it was years ago I read it, Unsheltered I still remember well.
One Book At A Time:
Carol's Group:
Bookie Babes:
Molly's Group:
Have you read or discussed any of these? Do you have any reading groups scheduled for July? What will you be discussing?
An interesting looking bunch of books. Unfortunately I have not read any. I am curious about Unsheltered though. I have not read Kingslover but I am thinking that maybe I should.
ReplyDeleteYou absolutely read Kingsolver and your wife would like her too, I bet. Probably she already has read her.
DeleteI am pretty amazed by your four book clubs you have going on. People always ask how I can read so many books at one time, and it is because I usually read about a wide variety of topics that are very very different from one another. I could never read a bunch of fiction at once, I would get all kinds of confused.
ReplyDeleteI don't read more than one fiction book at a time. I just count the pages and plan the sequence in which to read them. The meetings are spread throughout the month. However, I can only read one non-fiction book at a time or I get confused. We are opposites in that way!
DeleteAh, I see, that makes sense. It is kind of funny how we have discovered all of these similarities we have, but this thing is completely opposite.
DeleteFunny yes! Improbable no. But I do enjoy our similarities.
DeleteI've heard interesting things about Normal People and have been considering adding it to my list. I'll be interested to read your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI am pretty curious about it too.
DeleteThe House of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea is on my wishlist, so will be interested to read your review of it. I currently have The Hummingbird's Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea, but I have the feeling it will be a while before I get to this novel.
ReplyDeleteI read The Hummingbird's Daughter a long while ago but at least I was blogging then and here is my mixed review: https://keepthewisdom.blogspot.com/2007/12/hummingbirds-daughter.html
DeleteLooking back now it was good for learning some of Mexico's history. I get the idea that House of Broken Angels will be similar.
After reading your review of The Hummingbird's Daughter, I'm not so sure I want to read it now!!
DeleteWell, if you can hold off for a few weeks, I will post a review. I read one other by this author that just moved right along with no slow parts and was about Mexicans trying to immigrate to America. Check out my review: https://keepthewisdom.blogspot.com/2016/12/into-beautiful-north.html. That might be a better one to start with.
DeleteI have read White Teeth and Unsheltered, both with a book club, both great books. But then, we often agree.
ReplyDeleteHave a good week,
Marianne
Good! Thanks for your reading group report. We do often agree.
DeleteAn interesting group of books, for sure! I enjoyed the audio version of Normal People very much. I think the narrator (or her lovely Irish accent) added to the overall experience. It's a quiet novel and after initial raves, the reviews seem to be mixed now.
ReplyDeleteI read White Teeth ages ago and don't remember much about it. I wasn't a big fan, but several book club members hated it.
Unsheltered is still on my list.
My book club will discuss Ordinary Grace later this week. Enjoy your meetings!
Thanks for chiming in, Jo Ann. I am reading Normal People now and have not yet decided what I think about it. I can imagine that a narrator with an Irish accent would add much. I was a big fan of Unsheltered but I always love her books. Enjoy your meeting this week!
DeleteMy church's book club's June meeting, to discuss Vicky Beeching's memoir Undivided, has been postponed to the end of July now. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it, as I will be on holiday in Italy!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful holiday, Jessica! Thanks for chiming in.
DeleteOf this month's group, I've read only Unsheltered, rating 4.5 stars (of 5). I think you will really enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy Unsheltered, so much!
