JULY READING GROUP UPDATE

I was going to try getting a screen shot of one of my reading group meetings, but the group that was to meet yesterday decided to postpone to next week. Yes, we are all still on Zoom and the way it's going in California, probably will be for some time yet. So I'll give you that screen shot next month.

I have already previously read two of the books to be discussed this month but look forward to all of the sharing of viewpoints.

How are your reading groups faring these days? Have you read or discussed any of these books?

  1. I have never been part of a reading group. The closest I come to it is that our naturalists club has an informal get together about four times a year, when everyone takes in a nature related book they have read recently and talk about it a little. It's very enjoyable.

    1. That sounds quite wonderful, David. Once I joined my first reading group, I so enjoyed that sort of conversation that I just kept joining more groups. It now pretty much comprises my social life and is so much more satisfying for me than going to parties or other sorts of get togethers.

  2. Looks like a great month of reading ahead!! I've yet to read anything by T. C Boyle though... One day, I'll read one of his novels.

    1. I personally think T C Boyle is one of California's greatest writers.

  3. My book club had an excellent discussion with The Tortilla Curtain over a decade ago. I remember the audio version narrated by the author was particularly well done. There was some complaint about characters being stereotypes, but I loved the book. It portrays an issue with many complexities and no easy fixes. I think it would be interesting to revisit and rethink given our current situation. Enjoy your discussions this month... I miss my book club!

    1. JoAnn, I went and looked at the major reviews when the book was published. They were fairly damning. This was my first time reading it and it felt quite real in these days, a full 25 years later! That is T C Boyle for you.
I hope you can meet with your book club again sometime not too long from now.

  5. I may try The Glass Hotel.
In my book club, each of us report on the book we've read the previous month, we don't read all the same book.
    BUT I'm doing 4 read-alongs right now:
    - with online Murakami Book Club, I am reading A Wild Sheep Chase
    - with another blogger (and whoever wants to join our French book club on Discord): Compplètement cramé, by Legardinier
    - with 2 French students: Celle qui pleurait sous l'eau, a thriller by Tackian; and Le Livre de Perle, a YA fantasy by Timothée de Fombelle

    1. That sounds like a fine way to do a book club. I have done a couple read-alongs myself.

  6. That's another interesting group of books you have there. The only one I've read is Erdrich's book but the other three are on my radar.

    2. Agreed, it's very curious and draws me in. We all know I am a not-so-secret cover snob!

  8. I was sure I had commented but maybe I hadn't pressed "publish".

Anyway, I read another book by Olga Tokarczuk with my online book club, my Primeval and Other Times. We all really liked it as I'm sure you will like yours.

    Happy Reading

    1. Oh, I forget to do that sometimes. Flights was a bit challenging but I liked it in the end.

    2. She's definitely not someone who writes "easy read" books. But they are all the more deserving.

  9. Tortilla Curtain ... that's a great one! TC's pretty prolific ... which is his best? Maybe Tortilla Curtain. I need to read the others still. Have a great Zoom !

    1. He puts out books pretty steadily. I have read many but not all. Sometimes he misses for me but mostly I like his books. When The Killing's Done, The Harder They Fall and The Terranauts were some of my favorites.
