DECEMBER READING GROUP UPDATE

I thought I would be a little silly with the Zoom reading group image this month. Hope it gives you a laugh.

Only one holiday title for December but a good variety of books, none of which are too long, in case we have so many plans for the season. Not!

It will be a challenge to get in the spirit this year but each group will vote on what was the best book we discussed. There is talk of singing carols or playing a literary game. Readers do usually have good imaginations!

One Book At A Time:

Carol's Group:

Bookie Babes:
Tiny Book Club:

Are you attending any reading groups this month? What will you discuss?
Have you read any of these books?

  1. I've been meaning to read P D James for a while. Oddly the only one of hers I *have* read is her foray into SF with the post-apocalyptic novel 'Children of Men'. I did really enjoy the TV adaptations of some of her detective novels and was very impressed by her protagonist Adam Dalgliesh.

    1. She is pretty traditional in her mysteries but I like her more than Agatha Christie. I know that is heresy but that is how it is.

    2. Heresy! [lol] I'm a huge fan of Miss Marple and am presently working my way through her series. Not so much of Hercule Poirot though...

  2. These look interesting and different too. My group last met in October and now not until Jan on Zoom. I borrowed Mexican Gothic from library but didn't think it was for me so returned it unread - I'll be curious.

    1. Sorry you are missing your reading group for two months. I just finished Mexican Gothic and even though I am not drawn to horror I found it on the lighter side of that genre and interesting for the setting (Mexico) and the time period (1950s.) I can see it is not for everyone.

  4. Looks like a fun Zoom gathering from the pic! I'm curious about the Kevin Barry novel -- I almost picked that up once at the library. Enjoy your groups!

    1. I just started it last night. I was laughing and exhilarated in just three pages. It is a bit oddly put together though.

  6. i've tried P.D. James a couple of times, but she seems to love that looming sense of horror that pervades her books so i kind of gave up on her... i much prefer Wodehouse's approach... lol

    1. I love that looming sense of horror myself. Well, I did not used to so much but I do now. Too much like real life these days? I blush to admit I have not read Wodehouse. Is he humorous?

    2. somewhat of an acquired taste for moderns, but very very humorous for us oldsters...

  7. I confess there was a time in my life when I lived for each new P.D. James mystery, but I haven't read anything by her in years. I read Night Boat to Tangier last year and liked it well enough overall. I remember it reminded me of Waiting for Godot. I was not as taken with Mexican Gothic as a lot of readers. It was okay - not much more than that. I'll get to that Octavia Butler book eventually.

    1. Thank you for your complete answer! I am reading Night Boat right now and I like your comparison to Waiting For Godot. We can compare reviews of Mexican Gothic!
