BOOKS READ IN AUGUST

August was just fine for me, despite all the upsetting stuff that is going on. I celebrated my birthday, for a week, as always. We had a mix of heat waves and lovely days in the 80s with some clouds. As has been my way during the pandemic I escaped into books and was rewarded with all kinds of stories that reminded me there have always been troubles mixed with joys.

Stats: 11 books read. 8 fiction. 8 written by women. 2 science fiction. 1 mythology. 1 nonfiction. 1 memoir. 2 historical novels.

Place I went: United States, England, Greenland, Germany.

Authors new to me: Steph Cha, Rowan Hisayo Buchanan, Kevin Crossley-Holland, Judith Lindbergh, Markus Zusak.

Favorites: Night Sleep Death the Stars, In the Country of Women
Least favorite: Starling Days

    1. The Norse Myths were great! I learned all the gods and giants and about the creation of the tree and the lands and how Loki brought on the end of the world. Then I went on to read The Thrall's Tale, about the first Vikings to settle Greenland and I was totally up on their beliefs. I'll do a post on it all soon.

  2. As always, I am jealous of the number of books that you have finished in August. I am reading a bit faster now though.

I also had a pretty good August despite the state of the world.

    Happy reading in September

    1. Yes, I saw your tweet about reading more, Brian. I have always wanted more reading time, ever since I was a kid who grew up to have homework and got distracted by social activities, then parenthood and work. It was not until I retired that I gained back that time. Don't despair. You are doing great with your reading. I wish you well in September.

  3. I have 'The Book Thief' (presently unread). Oh, and Norse Myths totally *rock*. Thor was my hero LONG before Marvel got hold of him! Although Odin All Father is my *main* man. Anyone who can pluck out his own eye in order to see things more clearly gets my vote!

    1. I had had The Book Thief on my shelf for years. It was very much worth reading! Oh yes, the Norse Myths are the best I have read so far!

    1. Yes, Starling Days has a great cover and the British one is good too. The book was troubling to me though.

  6. You always have the most interesting books on your blog. The only one I have read is The Book Thief which I thought was really great.

    Happy September.

    1. I may be the last person who hadn't read The Book Thief yet. I am glad I finally got to it.

    2. I doubt you're the last person to read any book. LOL

But yes, I think it is definitely worth reading. It gives the whole WWII scene a new perspective.

  7. Nice! I started The Book Thief years ago and DNFed it. Too tough emotionally speaking. I'm reading way too many books at the same time, so only finished 7 in August

    1. I had started it once before and DNFed. This time I just took to it right away, but it is not quite a happy book, oh no!

    2. Definitely not and I understand if people can't cope with this kind of story at certain points in their lives. But it's definitely worth coming back to once one is up to it.

  9. Ohh you had a great reading August with these books. Happy belated birthday too! Are you a Leo? I have read The Book Thief .... that is dark & sad! I'm midway thru the Vanishing Half and I'm enjoying her storytelling ... interesting too. Will you be reviewing the Joyce Carol Oates book? I hope so... Enjoy your September!

    1. Yes I have been having a good run of books, both my own choices and my reading groups' picks. I have got my review of The Vanishing Half written up and I will definitely be reviewing the JCO book. Thanks for the birthday wish. I am a Leo on the 18th. Today I was looking back on the blog at some posts and realized that you are one of the longest running followers and commenters, so thank you!

  12. Happy belated Birthday, Judy! 🥳 I am also glad to hear you were able to escape from these crazy-days in some wonderful books. I enjoyed four books in August and my favourites were: The Cottingley Secret by Hazel Gaynor and Katharina by Margaret Skea. 🙂 Happy reading in September! 😃
