JULY READING GROUP UPDATE

A slight reading group schedule this month. I am down to 4 reading groups in my life these days. Two of them meet approximately every other month, so the average is 3 a month. I am good with that.

Report on last month's books: Audacity by Melanie Crowder was enjoyed by all. We talked about Judaism. Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton was a complete hit. One of our members has visited Cuba three times and told stories about that. We decided the romance was OK because Cubans are a romantic people. The Alice Network by Kate Quinn was a winner for Tina's Group. I will talk more about that when I post my review. The Last Painting of Sara de Vos by Dominic Smith brought mixed reactions. Everyone liked the Sara de Vos story but liked less the modern woman's story and something in the way the author went back and forth in time broke up the story too much for a few readers.

This month:

One Book At A Time:
Support Independent Bookstores - Visit IndieBound.org

Bookie Babes:
Support Independent Bookstores - Visit IndieBound.org

I am reserving judgement on both books until I read them One is about orphans. I usually like orphan stories. Have you read either of them?

I now have a couple followers who I know are in reading groups. What will you be discussing this month? Do you have any recommendations for my groups?

  1. I hope you enjoy both of those books. I've seen a lot of good reviews of Little Fires Everywhere, but I don't know anything about the Lisa Wingate book - I'll be interested to read your thoughts on them both.

  2. Wow, that's a lot of reading groups, I only belong to one. I loved Little Fires Everywhere as well as the author's first book - hope you like it to. I heard good things about Wingate as well.

    1. Yes, reading groups are my social life. At least we actually read the books, right? I hope I love Little Fires as much as most people seem to. What is your group reading in July?

  3. Dorothy read/reviewed the first last year. In the blogosphere at large it received generally good reviews. The second I've seen it on Amazon. I hope you like them both. :-)

  4. Interesting choices. I've read the Ng book but not the Wingate one; however, I've seen some glowing reviews of it so I think you may be in for some happy reading.

  5. Last month, my church's book club met to discuss the challenging Vanishing Grace by Philip Yancey. Currently I am reading The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri J.M. Nouwen, but the group probably won't be able to meet till after the summer holidays now.

  6. If I had to guess: I'd say you're probably not going to be overly happy with either but you should keep an open mind :-). I've just read the Ng book: which explores motherhood from about every angle. I had to reread my review of it, but I will keep mum on my thoughts till you finish. It's good to have these kinds too in book groups.

    1. I only remembered that you read the Ng book but not what you thought. You are right. I will revisit after I read. I just found out that the other book is set in the South which is a location I love reading about but I would never want to live there! We'll see.
